For every 100% my students get on an AR test, they get to fill out an "AR Lottery Ticket". On Fridays, I pull 5 lottery tickets and each winner gets a prize. Form includes a space for students to identify if the book is fiction or nonfiction. They can also identify the author and illustrator.

Love being part of a Caring Classroom! Students drew beautiful hearts on a sheet of notebook paper. For everything I said that could hurt someone's feelings, they crumpled their paper up. For every kind word I said, they straightened their paper back out. Lesson: mean words wrinkle the heart, and although kind words straighten it back out, the wrinkles will always have a lasting effect.

A friend of mine came up with this brilliant idea: use a two sided Restroom Pass and hang it on your classroom bathroom door. When the color side is out, the bathroom is available. As students go in, they simply flip the sign to show that the bathroom is occupied. No more "accidental walk-ins"!

This year, I really want students to be more active in tracking their learning. As a result, I created an Oral Fluency chart and graph for students to use to take ownership of their fluency growth. I also included a Class Data Chart to help the teacher keep an eye on fluency growth for the entire class.
